SMIT (Single Molecule Imaging Technology) Demonstrator Unit
University of Leicester
SMIT is a demonstration unit for drug discovery and molecular diagnosis.
SMIT harnesses a cluster of imaging hardware and software technologies from the space science instrumentation group in Leicester University’s Space Research Centre (SRC) to support the pursuit of drug discovery and medical diagnosis. Drug discovery and development is the most significant wealth producing arm of the healthcare R&D sector. This is a new demonstration facility for the support, germination and expansion of discovery and service based bioscience businesses in the region.
SMIT uses a combined technology platform to visualise (image) and measure, single molecules in real time and their interactions as the basis for the next wave of drug discovery biology. Our state-of-the art demonstrator facility is accessible to our existing and new technology partners to display and develop their businesses in the region.
The funding from European Development Funds and the University of Leicester has enabled us to offer a combined platform demonstrator unit which is accessible to users interested in exploring and adopting our single molecule imaging technologies (SMIT). The SMIT project is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through EMDA (East Midlands Development Agency) and the University of Leicester.
