GMES - Space Technology Exchange Partnership Hub (G-STEP)
University of Leicester
G-STEP (GMES Space and Technology Exchange Partnership) is part of the University of Leicester’s involvement in space research and is a GMES accelerator project applying earth observation data from satellite, aerial and ground-based earth observation to enhance business operations and competitiveness.
G-STEP works with businesses and organisations to support them in pioneering GMES product development and in utilising GMES services in commercial and business applications. G-STEP will exploit GMES technologies and the wider R&D base to advance business innovation and economic competitiveness in the East Midlands, nationally and internationally.
GMES (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security) is a flagship EC/ESA programme. The GMES programme generates information technology, with potential to provide novel commercial applications in many priority industrial sectors relating to the man made environmental and climate issues. G-STEP draws on the substantial expertise and knowledge base established within the University of Leicester’s wide ranging scientific programme in Earth Observation Science (EOS), which already has strong connections to GMES. This base provides a pool of EO innovation experts with extensive national and international links.
The project is the first GMES accelerator initiative in any UK region/administration. G-STEP is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through EMDA (East Midlands Development Agency), the Leicester-Shire Economic Partnership (LSEP) and the University of Leicester.
